Review:
Sound like a bold statement? Lovers of classic cops and robbers films of old will no doubt exceptions, but I believe that Michael Mann achieved a certain degree of perfection with Heat. To break up the core, this gem of three hours of film, this is a film about men - strong men - and the supporting role of women is on film for better or worse. Take good cop Pacino as Vincent Hanna: one of the most intense characterizations of the tragic hero that I have ever experienced, he regrets the death of his third marriage with a woman pill junkie. A fact that he discusses with his nemesis (De Niro) in what history will regard as one of the most hectic scenes in film history. The dialogue in this scene (at the very end of the first band, if you own the VHS version), the last half of the film beautifully, as both our rivals for realization of the company do not hand in choose the paths that will lead to their eventual confrontation which their nature, so that their respective actions that any attempt to do otherwise just make waste of time should be to define. While I Other (which I am ashamed sometimes good friends call me) heard it said that the heat drags in places, I will admit that there are moments in the film more than fleeting attention they give the film happens to need to look at some time (I'm sorry not every director Jerry Bruckheimer), a poignant developments of character in many of which overlook heat. I think casual interaction between the ex-con who is conditional diner work with opportunistic scum of a boss, and girlfriend should swallow his pride and not just give the sonofabitch a good pummeling. So proud of him But I felt a catharsis for the same ex-con when De Niro character gives him the opportunity to score, for old times sake still takes. Who does not feel for this guy - this minor character in the film with big-time heavyweights who gets to shine for a few brief moments. That's what heat really is: a series of brief moments, some touching, others traumatic, and others still in incredibly horrible feelings that inspire romantic, as I do not see black or white photographs of actors and villain, but montage of gray forming vivid spectrum of film characterization can be found in hundreds of films to create together. One of my five favorite films of all time, heat is cinematic banquet of images and intense pounding action. Come hungry.
